Coffee Craze
April 30th, 2008
Coffee is both an enjoyment and a necessity. It helps us get through the day but it’s also an art that deserves appreciation. Besides a regular cup of joe, we also love the flavor in our foods. Check out this month’s seven coffee food cravings, and a short list of our favorite coffee joints!
We also wanted to mention that there’s still the chance to attend the 2008 Toast of the Town food and wine tasting event in New York! It’s taking place at Lincoln Center on May 19 from 7pm to 10pm. Click here to purchase tickets and get more information.

Ensalada De Jicama (jicama-avocado “ravioli”)
April 28th, 2008
I love avocado, and Chef/owner Julian Medina of Toloache definitely has a way with it, whether it’s in his three different flavors of guacamole — traditional, frutas and rojo — or his out-of-this-world jicama-avocado “ravioli.” The skins of the ravioli are thin slices of jicama, wrapped around pieces of avocado. They are light and delicate, making a wonderful starter salad with mixed greens, orange, radish and almonds dressed with tamarind vinaigrette. Paired with a margarita, this refreshing dish is the ideal start to an excellent Mexican meal.

Tet is the Vietnamese New Year, the celebration of a new beginning, and it’s a good name for Steven Duong’s new restaurant in Alphabet City. Mr. Duong also owns Nam in Tribeca and O Mai in Chelsea, both longtime local favorites. Nam is one of my top choices in Vietnamese restaurants, especially for the seafood dumplings in soup, so I was eager to try Tet and see what other treats were in store.
