Pancakes

Getting to Egg for brunch was not that easy, since they are only open from 7am to noon on weekdays and 8am to noon on weekends. Technically, they serve breakfast, not brunch, which as Eric Asimov points out in his October 14, 2005 review of the restaurant, is a hard concept for New Yorkers to grasp. Egg serves their breakfast in the space that is Sparky’s All-American Food, a hot dog and hamburger joint for lunch and dinner.

Egg is a great neighborhood café. They serve a Southern-style breakfast, such as eggs with grits and country ham, a Grafton Cheddar omelet, and biscuits and gravy. The pancake I had was soft and fluffy with strawberries inside. The side of hashbrowns was a tad overcooked, but still yummy. After some eggs, buttermilk biscuits, sausages, pancakes and hashbrowns, with orange juice and some tea, I was a very happy camper.

There was a bit of a wait to sit, as the narrow garage space that Egg occupies doesn’t seat that many, and the service was slow since they were busy. If I lived in Williamsburg I would love to come here daily for breakfast, just to eat some good grub and take in the world before going to work, or even just to get take-out. It’s a shame that there’s nothing like it in Manhattan, because it really is such a nice local café. It just feels weird to have to travel to eat at a place like Egg. Somehow I feel less relaxed because it has to be planned and becomes more of a production.
