My good friend, and Cravings’ Paris contributor, Everett, has always had the habit of keeping a bottle of champagne in his fridge; just in case guests drop by last minute, he can offer them a classy aperitif. I have often been the lucky recipient of his thoughtful generosity. In this new year, why not keep a ready-to-drink bottle in your fridge, just in case?

Here’s a top pick:
1998 Nicolas Feuillatte Blanc de Blancs ($40)

Why:
1. This 100% Chardonnay wine is an elegant aperitif
2. A charming honeyed nose is followed by beautiful acidity
3. 1998 is a vintage that I am enjoying tremendously
4. Great price for a top year, showing freshness and vibrancy
5. Easy to pair with light snacks to serve to guests

Why not have friends meet at home for a drink first, then go out for dinner? A French habit I’ve picked up over the years.
