The musakhan at Tanoreen is a slice of heaven! It’s shredded chicken, caramelized onions, sumac, spices, roasted nuts and olive oil piled on top of a warm, soft flatbread. The chicken is tender and extremely well seasoned, the caramelized onions add a touch of sweetness, and the almonds play an important role in creating a crunchy texture that contrasts the fluffy flatbread. I added a little labaneh (Middle Eastern yogurt spread topped with mint and olive oil) to the mix for a bit of refreshment, and it made the dish complete! The menu at Tanoreen is vast, and all of it is delicious, but this musakhan is just unforgettable and totally worth the trek out to Bay Ridge.

Toad In A Hole

Since Flatbush Farm’s brunch menu is so simple, I had to go with the kitschiest name on the list, and it certainly paid off. The toad in a hole, also known as one-eyed jack, is an egg that has been fried in a hole cut in a slice of bread — in Farm’s case, a thick, buttery slice of homemade brioche. Way to kick it up! It’s topped with melted Cheddar then sprinkled with chives. This brunch dish hit my stomach like a brick, that is, a warm, delicious, savory little brick that sent me straight back to bed.

I’m always on the lookout for the perfect croissant. It doesn’t matter whether I’m craving something savory or something sweet, if I see a croissant with potential, I give it a whirl. Those buttery bundles of flakey goodness never disappoint. So I finally came across the infamous pretzel croissant from City Bakery. Turns out, I’m obsessed. It looks like a croissant, feels like a croissant, but tastes like a pretzel — a buttery, flakey, tender little pretzel with the right amount of salt in every bite. The outer shell is crisp and buttery and when you sink your teeth into it, you’ll be pleased to find a soft fluffy inside with dainty brown pretzel-like specs. Adorned with a light sprinkling of sesame seeds, there’s a delicate crunch as you gnaw away at this heavenly treat.

Pizza Cavolfiore (cauliflower pizza)

Grandaisy Bakery has delicious pizzas whose recipes date back to the original Sullivan Street Bakery. Though the once-owners of a single enterprise have now gone their separate ways, the two resulting bakeries both serve many similar, if not some of the same, delicious goodies. However, the cauliflower pizza is only available at Grandaisy bakery, and it is in my opinion the most delicious of the pizzas, though all of them — potato, tomato, mushroom, zucchini, celery root — are excellent! With pieces of cauliflower, gruyere cheese and specks of parsley topping their signature crispy, thin crust, it’s a delicate but winning combination. On occasion, walking home after having a slice, I’ve had to circle back to get another.

Once a week, I’ll pick up a toasted mini sesame bagel with scallion cream cheese and a slice of tomato from Bagel Bob’s. I have to credit this craving to my sister, Cynthia. Bagel Bob’s been around for some time and it’s always consistent, but these mini bagels stand out because a mini is just the right portion for me. Since bagels are denser than other breads, a regular bagel is always too much. But these minis are brilliant! I can make my own mini BLT w/ avocado on bagel without having to skip the next meal.
