On a recent late night forage for sweets, I headed over to my neighborhood bakery, Batch. To accompany my cupcake, Chef/owner Pichet Ong recommended a cup of Manhattan Milk. One sip of the whole milk and I was sold. It hit the spot and sated my craving.
Manhattan Milk Company actually is a local delivery service of dairy products including milk, cheese, eggs and yogurt from Pennsylvania Dutch country. So now as a Manhattanite, you can enjoy farm fresh, organic milk delivered straight to your door!
Glass bottled quarts of milk come whole, 1%, skim or chocolate. The whole milk has a layer of cream on top that just screams of goodness.
This week’s prize is delivery of three bottles of milk, a dozen eggs and a string of cheese!
Deliveries are made once a week on Wednesdays (early, by sunup), and in person by the company’s creative director, Frank Acosta. Frank and his partner, Matthew Marone, want to make sure that you experience that personal touch. Get to know your milkman!
Manhattan Milk products can be ordered through their website for delivery. You can also get a taste of their milk at Batch (150B W 10th St).
Thanks, Manhattan Milk, for this week’s Baking Friday contribution!
Note:
Baking Fridays occurs one Friday a month. Sign up to be on our mailing list and we'll let you know when Baking Fridays takes place!

Mostly at Trader Joe’s. Three buck chuck is really good. Also at Union Square Wines and the Manhattan Wine Exchange…near home and work.

oh this baking friday is the best prize ever! will go perfectly with the strawberry cobbler i plan to make this weekend ;)
okay, so wine. a few places particularly tickle my fancy. chambers street wines for most thoughtful wine selection (green, small, and good), le du’s for french (and entertainment. . . i love jean luc!), tribeca wine merchants for small finds, and pasanella and sons for ambiance (a truly beautiful establishment. . . in fact, just bought some wine there last night!)
and i think that should cover it!

Astor W&S – great selection and good deals, often times have in-store tastings. Fun place

Manley’s on 8th Avenue near Jane Street. Aside from the basics, you can find some rare bottles from the owner’s cellar. They have a model train that circumnavigates the ceiling of the store, which runs at Christmas that I always look froward to seeing. Another favorite is Crossroads on 14th Street that amounts to a combination warehouse/curiosity shoppe.

Trader Joe’s, which is surprisingly never too crowded, or that warehouse-like wine shop around 8th street and university place.

Another vote for Astor Wine. Great selections & deals (especially on Tuesdays).

Gnarly Vines in Fort Greene! It’s amazing for wine and hard to find spirits. On Myrtle Avenue. If you don’t live in the area it’s certainly worth the trip, or at least getting delivery.

Crush Wines, Astor, and Chambers are my faves… sometimes www.klwines.com for something obscure.

Bottlerocket. They have a variety of wines in all price ranges and tastes.

I usually buy at Garnet on 68th and Lex and don’t know the name but a very nice place on 71st and 1st- stays open later. A bit pricey but you can’t go wrong with their recommendation!

Though I have bought wine from Trader Joe’s when I am there I have to say when I actually go out to shop for wine there are two places on the UWS that deserve some attention for the attention they give their patrons…
Pour Wines — the concept of shopping for wine based on the food you are planning to eat is so buyer friendly as are all of the staff in this cute little store (BONUS: they’re next door to the UWS Crumbs location; cupcakes & wine, life doesn’t get any better)
67 Wine & Spirits — Large volume wine store with a small boutique store feel and lots of free tastings.

Trader Joes – not just for the price. The staff really goes out of their way to make sure you get the right wine.
