Memorial Day weekend marks the official start of summer and that means it’s cocktail season. Well actually, cocktail season is year-round, but I mean it’s summer cocktail season.

Whether you’re entertaining friends at home, at the beach, or grilling away in your backyard, you’ll want some refreshing drinks to keep cool during the warm weather. Mr. Boston Summer Cocktails provides more than 100 recipes to help you create thirst-quenchers with seasonal ingredients and summertime flavors.

Mr. Boston has been the go-to guide for bartenders since the end of Prohibition. This book includes recipes ranging from classics like the Singapore Sling to contemporary drinks like the Cherry Caipirinha.

Enter this week’s Baking Friday to win a copy of Mr. Boston Summer Cocktails, and in the meantime, here’s an easy and refreshing one to start with.

Cheers and happy summer!

A mint julep done right is irresistible in summer. Elizabeth on 37th in Savannah served up the best tasting one I’ve ever had. I am not the only one who thinks so:

Campari soda
Fresh tomato juice made with ripe tomato without seeds, some ice, a tbs sugar. It’s frothy, ice cold and sweet(er)! My grandma used to make it for me. So I haven’t had it in a very very long time. May be I should make it this summer in memory of her!

This is from a Tavern in MD which created a non-alcoholic version during Prohibition. Bourbon or rum can be added for kick.

Ginger Punch
1 qt. cold water 1 cup sugar
½ lb ginger
½ cup orange juice
½ cup lime or lemon juice (Fresh)
Make a simple syrup with water, sugar and chopped ginger, strain add juice. Serve over ice.

Can also add 1/2 liter of club soda if you find it too “gingery”

All these suggestions sound fantastic! Wouldn’t mind spending a lazy afternoon sipping any and all of them. I’d like to toss in the French 75. Invariably, I order one at Absinthe in SF where the addition of a brandied cherry is so lovely. Cheers to the summer coming back to SF soon!

Singapore Sling (at every 1980’s disco)

1/2 oz grenadine syrup
1 oz gin
sweet and sour mix
club soda
1/2 oz cherry brandy

Pour grenadine into the bottom of a collins glass, and fill with ice. Add gin, and almost-fill with equal parts of sweet and sour and chilled soda. Top with cherry brandy, and serve unstirred, garnished with a cherry.
